Down the road, we will probably all remember 2006 as the year that power consumption, cooling, and energy efficiency became leading issues for data centre managers everywhere. Given that the demand for processing shows no signs of slowing, it’s a safe bet that these issues will dominate in 2007. With this in mind, TAB will continue to bring you articles, case studies, product features and news to help cope with whatever data centre challenges you face. To get you started, this month we’ve compiled our most viewed articles and case studies from 2006.

We’ve also got another case study for you this month. The Ultimate Data Centre Configuration tells the story of a leading Canadian Communications Company's quest to find the perfect configuration for their data centre, and how TAB was instrumental in getting them there.

We always interested in what our readers think, so if you have any feedback, please let us know!

TAB Case Study: The Ultimate Data Centre Configuration

Three years ago, the IT group at a leading Canadian Communications Company was on a mission to find the “ultimate configuration” for their Montreal data centre. Their success in the Canadian communications market had meant continued growth, pushing their existing facility to its limits. Consequently the IT group found themselves facing thermal, space, power and cabling issues with increasing frequency. So when it was decided to build an extension onto the data centre, they were determined to get it right. They wanted a partner to help them find a flexible solution that would give them more power, more cooling, more space, cable management, and the ability to grow. After a very long and highly competitive selection process, they chose TAB to be that partner. Read more…

Planning Saves on Cabling Costs

The ever increasing demand for processing power has meant that every year more and more equipment has to be shoehorned into the data centre. This has put the focus on an often forgotten topic: cabling. When it comes to structured cabling, the emphasis is on planning. Addressing the cabling requirements in the planning stages of a build or move can save you a significant amount of money.

Power Whatever the Weather

Cutting power costs and cooling hot servers are uppermost on the minds of data centre managers everywhere, but with the increase in extreme weather episodes, you would be well advised to review your power infrastructure. ITWorld Canada recently carried an interesting article on outage-proofing the data centre and why data centre managers need to be more diligent about it.

Two Major Players, Two Major Data Centres

Recently, both Google and Microsoft announced plans to build huge data centre facilities to keep up with online demand. Google’s facility will cost an estimated $710 million (CDN) and will be built in North Carolina, while Microsoft’s data centre will come in around $650 million (CDN) and be built in San Antonio, Texas.
